演講大綱
Tufts professor Claire Conceison 康开丽 will speak about the life of Ying Ruocheng 英若诚 and their collaboration on his autobiography, Voices Carry: Behind Bars and Backstage during China’s Revolution and Reform, which was just published in English in the United States (a Chinese version is forthcoming in Beijing in April).
Voices Carry is the autobiography of Ying Ruocheng, one of China’s most prominent citizens of the 20th century. Famous for his film roles in The Last Emperor and Marco Polo, he also played renowned stage roles as Liu Mazi 刘麻子 in Teahouse 茶馆 and Willy Loman in Death of a Salesman 推销员之死 (when Arthur Miller directed it in Beijing in 1983). He also translated many plays between English and Chinese. He was imprisoned for spying during the Cultural Revolution and was appointed Vice Minister of Culture from 1986-1990. In his memoir, he discusses all these experiences, as well as his childhood living in a prince’s palace 庆王府.
Ying Ruocheng was the grandson of Ying Lianzhi 英敛之 (founder of Dagongbao 大公报 and Furen University 辅仁大学) and son of Ying Qianli 英千里 (famous educator and scholar in Taiwan), and was the father of mainland China celebrity actor and television personality Ying Da 英达.
Claire Conceison collaborated with Ying Ruocheng on his autobiography until his death in 2003, and completed the project for him afterwards. Her presentation includes photographs and documents from Ying Ruocheng’s life and career, and will be in both English and Chinese.

GBCCA Hiking Club Announcement
PLACE: Flume Gorge at Franconia Notch State Park, White Mountains, NH
DATE: August 16, 2009, Sunday
TIME: 10:00am
MEET: 9:45am @ Visitor Center, Franconia/Lincoln, NH 603-745-8391
Estimated Hiking Duration: 2.5 hours
Level of difficulty: Moderate
Brief:
The Flume Gorge at Franconia Notch State Park is in the heart of the popular White Mountain National Forest.
Discovered in 1808, the Flume is a natural gorge extending 800 feet at the base of Mount Liberty. The walls of Conway granite rise to a height of 70 to 90 feet and are 12 to 20 feet apart. A trip into the Flume begins and ends at the Flume Visitor's Center. We can walk through the Gorge and do a two-mile loop. The walk includes uphill walking and stairs but is very beautiful.
Franconia Notch was the home of the famous Old Man of the Mountain, the same "Great Stone Face" immortalized by Nathaniel Hawthorne and Daniel Webster.
While you are in the White Mountains area, you could also ride the exciting aerial tramway at Cannon Mountain, experience the Mount Washington Cog Railroad which has the steepest grade (13.5) of any railroad in the world, and have a beautiful lunch at the Bretton Woods hotel which was the site for the World Monetary Fund Conference in 1944.
Take your time, stop for a swim at Echo Lake, net a trout while fly fishing at Profile Lake, ride your bike on the Recreational Trail, watch for rock climbers, hawks, and falcons on Cannon Cliffs, or hike on the Appalachian Trail. Bring the family, stay awhile, and enjoy Franconia Notch State Park.
Directions:
It's easy to get to Franconia Notch State Park! Take I-93 north or south, depending on your starting point. The Flume Gorge and Visitor Center is located at exit 34A. It takes about 1 hr 45 minutes from Nashua and 2 hours 30 minutes from Boston.

The exhibit includes self-portraits, photo collages, and comic strips created by high school students during the weeklong ExplorAsian Program.
Sarah Chang, Educational and Arts Coordinator of ExplorAsian, explains: “We hope this exhibit will encourage youth to continue exploration of their identities and stories in meaningful and empowering ways and that the experience will teach youth to participate in their communities with greater understanding and purpose. ”
New England Chinese Youth Summer Camp (NECYSC) is a non-profit organization whose goal is to foster community for youth ages 6-14 who are interested in Chinese culture. The ExplorAsian Summer Program was created as a continuation of NECYSC to promote positive identity development and encourage involvement and awareness of community issues for high school students.
The W/Y Gallery, or Henry Wong and You King Yee Memorial Gallery, is an artistic extension of the Chinese Progressive Association—a grass roots organization located in Boston’s Chinatown that has worked to represent and empower low-income workers, immigrants, families and the elderly since the 1970s. The organization has 30 years of experience using the arts as a progressive tool for raising public awareness about social and political themes relevant to the population it serves.
The exhibit will open Friday, August 21st, 2009 at the Chinese Progressive Association (28 Ash Street, Boston) and run until November 3rd, 2009. A reception will be held on Friday, August 21st from 6:00 – 8:00PM, where certificates will be presented to participating youth artists. Light refreshments will be served.
Gallery hours are Monday - Wednesday, 9:00AM – 5:00PM, Saturdays 10:00AM – 12:00noon, and by appointment. The exhibit is free and open to the public.

GBCCA Fund Raising BBQ for Typhoon Morakot victims
We hope everyone is enjoying the summer. We are looking forward to seeing friends, members and families at the GBCCA summer BBQ this coming Saturday, August 29, 2009.
Since we have learned of the tragic news of the devastating damage Typhoon Morakot caused in Taiwan, GBCCA would like to use this BBQ as important opportunity for us to unite as a Chinese community, and help raise funds for the Morakot Victims in Taiwan. 100% of the proceeds from this BBQ will go towards the victims to help them to rebuild their homes and infrastructures and move on. For this reason, we have adjusted the ticket price for the fundraising efforts.
Tickets to the BBQ can be reserved in advance by calling GBCCA office at 617-332-0377, or at the BBQ
Location: The BBQ will be held at the GBCCA Building, 437 Cherry St. West Newton, MA 02465
Date: Saturday, August 29th
Time: 11:30 am - 2:30 am
Ticket price: Adults: $9, Children under 12: $5
To those of you who can not attend the BBQ, but still wish to support this fundraising event and help us raise money for Typhoon Morakot victims, we will be accepting checks made payable to GBCCA. Please write the Morakot relief fund on your check and mail it to GBCCA, 437 Cherry Street, West Newton, MA 02465.
Additional donations at the BBQ will of course be welcome, and greatly appreciated. Your donation is qualified for tax deduction. You can also specify the charity name on the check if you have a preference.
We look forward to having everyone join us at this BBQ! Please respond to GBCCA office by phone or e-mail to confirm your attendance. Thank you ahead for your support!
